Research Update (October 5, 2026)

Research Update (October 5, 2026)

Diligence Technologies Inc., West Tennessee

EVENTS FROM THE PAST MONTH:

Tyson Raper put on another excellent version of the cotton tour at the experiment station here in Jackson.  If you could handle the heat, the stops were very educational.

CROPPING SEASONS:

Harvest time is here.  The temperatures have been hot, and the weather has been dry.  Early planted corn was largely done prior to the latest round of dry weather and yields should be good.  However, later planted corn and soybeans most likely lost some yield potential trying to complete maturity under less-than-ideal conditions.  In either case, the crops are drying down rapidly, and harvest is progressing as fast as we can get things out of the field.

Also, we are preparing for fall trials.  If you are looking for wheat trials or fall weed control screens, let us know so we can save you a spot.

GREENHOUSE PROJECTS

It is hard to believe that greenhouse season is here again.  We normally get the greenhouse going in October each fall.  Below are examples of some of the greenhouse trials we have conducted in the past.  Let us know what we can do for you.

WEATHER INFO:

I cannot recall extremely hot weather lasting as long into September as it did this year.  Beginning in late August, we basically had a month of temperatures near 100 degrees and little or no rainfall.  We normally expect some of that in July and August, but this year it stretched out into September and did not break until about the 22nd of the month.  As noted earlier, it had the effect of finishing off the crops in a hurry (both good and bad depending on the trial).

PEST INFO:

Plant bugs in cotton came on late this year.  We had just enough time to make applications and get a few counts before they crashed.  Stinkbug pressure has been moderate but consistent.  Soybean looper populations have been relatively slow to build this season also.  I guess the insects don’t like the heat any more than we do.
